“My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small.”

And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small."

The supplication is the last step of a passage that begins by placing kindness to parents immediately after the command to worship Allah alone. It then forbids so much as a word of irritation, then requires lowering “the wing of humility” towards them out of mercy — and only after all that comes this prayer. What it asks for is worth reading twice: mercy in the measure they once gave it, at the age when the child could give nothing back.
