My Lord, grant me from Yourself a good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication.
“My Lord, grant me from Yourself a good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication.”
When Zachariah saw the food that Allah was miraculously giving to Mary, he became hopeful that Allah would give him a child despite being very old and his wife being unable to bear children. He said: O Lord, give me a good child. You hear the prayer of the person who prays to You and You know his condition.
The plain meaning, from Al-Mukhtasar fi at-Tafsir
At that, Zechariah called upon his Lord, saying, "My Lord, grant me from Yourself a good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication."
What does Quran 3:38 mean?
The verse gives the moment the prayer was made. Zakariyya (peace be upon him) had been entering upon Maryam and finding provision with her that had no visible source, and each time he asked where it came from she answered that it was from Allah. It was seeing that, the commentators say, that made him ask — the request grew out of watching what Allah does for someone else.
