Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the final destination.
“Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the final destination.”
And I commanded the human to obey his parents and do good towards them in matters that do not lead to the disobedience of Allah. His mother carried him in her womb having to face difficulty upon difficulty, weaning him off breastfeeding within two years.
The plain meaning, from Al-Mukhtasar fi at-Tafsir
وَوَصَّيْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ بِوَٰلِدَيْهِ حَمَلَتْهُ أُمُّهُۥ وَهْنًا عَلَىٰ وَهْنٍ وَفِصَٰلُهُۥ فِى عَامَيْنِ أَنِ ٱشْكُرْ لِى وَلِوَٰلِدَيْكَ إِلَىَّ ٱلْمَصِيرُ
And We have enjoined upon man care for his parents. His mother carried him, increasing her in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the final destination.
What does Quran 31:14 mean?
This sits inside Luqman’s advice to his son, and the Qur’an interrupts that advice to say it in its own voice. The interruption describes what a mother carried — weakness upon weakness, and two years of weaning — before naming the duty. The order in the command is exact: to Me, then to your parents; and it closes by naming where the account is finally settled.
