Our Lord, make us Muslims in submission to You, and from our descendants a Muslim nation.
“Our Lord, make us Muslims in submission to You, and from our descendants a Muslim nation.”
They asked Allah to make them surrender in devotion to His command, humble towards Him, not worshipping anyone besides Him; and to make their children and their descendants a nation who also surrendered in devotion to Him.
The plain meaning, from Al-Mukhtasar fi at-Tafsir
رَبَّنَا وَٱجْعَلْنَا مُسْلِمَيْنِ لَكَ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِنَآ أُمَّةً مُّسْلِمَةً لَّكَ وَأَرِنَا مَنَاسِكَنَا وَتُبْ عَلَيْنَآ ۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلتَّوَّابُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
Our Lord, and make us Muslims in submission to You and from our descendants a Muslim nation in submission to You. And show us our rites of worship and accept our repentance. Indeed, You are the Accepting of Repentance, the Merciful.
What does Quran 2:128 mean?
Ibrahim and Isma‘il (peace be upon them) say this while raising the foundations of the Ka‘bah — the prayer is made with their hands still on the building. What they ask for is not that the work be accepted on its own terms but that they themselves be made submissive, and that the same be given to those who come after them. They finish by asking to be shown how to worship.
