And enjoin prayer upon your family, and be steadfast therein.
“And enjoin prayer upon your family, and be steadfast therein.”
And order your family, O Messenger, to perform prayer, and you also remain constant in its performance. I do not ask you for your own sustenance or that of others; I will take care of your sustenance.
The plain meaning, from Al-Mukhtasar fi at-Tafsir
وَأْمُرْ أَهْلَكَ بِٱلصَّلَوٰةِ وَٱصْطَبِرْ عَلَيْهَا ۖ لَا نَسْـَٔلُكَ رِزْقًا ۖ نَّحْنُ نَرْزُقُكَ ۗ وَٱلْعَٰقِبَةُ لِلتَّقْوَىٰ
And enjoin prayer upon your family and people and be steadfast therein. We ask you not for provision; We provide for you, and the best outcome is for those of righteousness.
What does Quran 20:132 mean?
The verse just before this one tells the Prophet (peace be upon him) not to strain his eyes towards what others have been given to enjoy. Then comes this: order your family to pray, and be steadfast in it yourself. The order of the two halves matters — the instruction to the household is followed immediately by the demand on the one giving it. And the passage answers the worry underneath: We ask no provision of you; We provide for you.
