“Tie your camel and then put your trust in Allah.”

The words are an answer to a question. A man asked whether he should let his camel loose and rely on Allah, or tie it and rely — and this was the reply. Al-Tirmidhi records it and calls the chain unusual, though scholars have accepted its meaning as sound and it is quoted everywhere for the principle it settles: taking the means is not the opposite of reliance, it is part of it.
