“There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.”

And mention the man of the fish i.e., Jonah, when he went off in anger and thought that We would not decree anything upon him. And he called out within the darknesses, "There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers."

These are the words of Yunus (peace be upon him) from inside the whale — what the Qur’an calls “the darknesses”, which the commentators read as three at once: the belly, the sea and the night. What he says is worth noticing for what it leaves out. There is no request in it. He declares Allah’s oneness, exalts Him above any fault, and names himself as the one in the wrong; the deliverance comes in the next verse.
