The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) says that the believer might be afflicted with personal, family, financial, or other crises. If he is patient, Allah will reward him. The more terrible the crisis, the greater the reward one gets from Allah.

عن أنس بن مالك رضي الله عنه عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أنه قال: "إن عِظَمَ الجزاءِ مع عِظَمِ البلاءِ، وإن الله تعالى إذا أحب قوما ابتلاهم، فمن رَضِيَ فله الرِضا، ومن سَخِطَ فله السُّخْطُ".

What does Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2396 mean?
Narrated by Anas ibn Malik. Two things are joined here that are usually kept apart: that the size of the trial sets the size of the reward, and that being tested is a sign of being loved. The last clause is the one the scholars underline, because it is the part a person controls — the trial is decreed either way, and what is left to choose is contentment or resentment.
