“The best of people are those most beneficial to people.”

The wording is preserved by al-Tabarani, and it belongs to a family of narrations answering the same question — which people are best. The scholars who accepted it read the measure literally: not the most learned or the most worshipful, but the one others get the most good from. It is the plainest test in the collection, and the hardest to claim for oneself.
