A'ishah asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) what to say if she knew which night was Laylat al-Qadr, and this is what she was taught — recorded by al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah and Ahmad. The wording here follows the established narration: the word "Generous" that some copies of al-Tirmidhi add after "Pardoning" is absent from every other collection, and hadith critics treat it as a copyist's insertion. What the du'a asks for is not forgiveness but 'afw — the pardon that leaves no trace of the offence behind.
