Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Charity does not diminish wealth, and Allah does not increase a servant, on account of his forgiveness, except in honor, and no one humbles himself seeking the pleasure of Allah except that Allah will elevate him."
What does Sahih Muslim 2588 mean?
Narrated by Abu Hurayrah and recorded by Muslim, from the same hadith as the promise about charity. The condition the commentators insist on is in the wording: humbling oneself for Allah — not out of fear of someone, not to flatter, not to get something. The exchange described runs the opposite way to how it looks from outside.
