My Lord, increase me in knowledge.
“My Lord, increase me in knowledge.”
Allah is High above and Exalted from what the idolaters describe Him with of deficiencies and from what they attribute as partners to Him. He is the Majestic King, to whom belongs the kingdom of everything, and who is the Truth and speaks the truth.
The plain meaning, from Al-Mukhtasar fi at-Tafsir
فَتَعَٰلَى ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمَلِكُ ٱلْحَقُّ ۗ وَلَا تَعْجَلْ بِٱلْقُرْءَانِ مِن قَبْلِ أَن يُقْضَىٰٓ إِلَيْكَ وَحْيُهُۥ ۖ وَقُل رَّبِّ زِدْنِى عِلْمًا
So high above all is Allah, the Sovereign, the Truth. And, O Muḥammad, do not hasten with recitation of the Qur’ān before its revelation is completed to you, and say, "My Lord, increase me in knowledge."
What does Quran 20:114 mean?
The words come at the end of an instruction. The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to hurry to repeat the revelation while Jibril was still conveying it, anxious not to lose a word; he is told not to hasten, and given this to say instead. Commentators regularly note what is being asked for — of all the things he could have been told to seek an increase in, it is knowledge.
