“Many a brother is one your mother never bore.”

A classical Arabic proverb — rubba akhin laka lam talidhu ummuk — preserved in the old collections of Arab proverbs. It names something the tradition takes seriously enough to legislate around: brotherhood in faith is a real bond, with rights attached, and not a figure of speech.
