“If speech is silver, silence is gold.”

This proverb travels in many languages and its origin is disputed rather than settled; the Arabic form is in common use and is what is given here. The Islamic anchor for it is not the proverb but the hadith it echoes: whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should say what is good or keep silent.
