Then Joseph called upon his Lord, saying that He had given him power in Egypt and had taught him the interpretation of dreams;
The plain meaning, from Al-Mukhtasar fi at-Tafsir
رَبِّ قَدْ ءَاتَيْتَنِى مِنَ ٱلْمُلْكِ وَعَلَّمْتَنِى مِن تَأْوِيلِ ٱلْأَحَادِيثِ ۚ فَاطِرَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ أَنتَ وَلِىِّۦ فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْءَاخِرَةِ ۖ تَوَفَّنِى مُسْلِمًا وَأَلْحِقْنِى بِٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ
My Lord, You have given me something of sovereignty and taught me of the interpretation of dreams. Creator of the heavens and earth, You are my protector in this world and the Hereafter. Cause me to die a Muslim and join me with the righteous."
What does Quran 12:101 mean?
This is Yusuf’s (peace be upon him) prayer at the end of the story, and it is worth reading against everything that led to it — the well, the household, the prison, and finally authority over Egypt and his family restored. At the moment everything has been given back, what he asks for is to die in submission and be joined to the righteous. Ibn Kathir notes it as a supplication made at the height of his worldly standing.
