ٱدْعُوا۟ رَبَّكُمْ تَضَرُّعًا وَخُفْيَةً ۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَا يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُعْتَدِينَ
Call upon your Lord in humility and privately; indeed, He does not like transgressors.
What does Quran 7:55 mean?
Two words carry the instruction: humbly, and privately. The commentators read the second as a guard on the first — supplication made quietly is harder to perform for an audience. The verse then warns against overstepping in supplication, and names the worst form of it: calling on anyone besides Allah. What follows softens the tone again, telling the believers to call on Him in fear and hope both.
