But you prefer the worldly life, while the Hereafter is better and more enduring.
Quran 87:16-17
“But you prefer the worldly life, while the Hereafter is better and more enduring.”
But, you give preference to the worldly life and prefer it over the afterlife despite the huge disparity between them.
The plain meaning, from Al-Mukhtasar fi at-Tafsir
بَلْ تُؤْثِرُونَ ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْءَاخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ وَأَبْقَىٰٓ
But you prefer the worldly life, While the Hereafter is better and more enduring.

What does Quran 87:16-17 mean?
Surah al-A‘la has just named what succeeds — purification, remembrance, prayer — and then, without transition, says why most people will not do it. The diagnosis is preference, not ignorance: the choice is made knowing the comparison. The two words the surah picks for the Hereafter are the two the world cannot match — better, and more lasting.
