“A friend is known in times of need.”

One of the most widely used Arabic proverbs, and the Arabic is tighter than the English: as-sadiq waqt ad-diq — “the friend is at the time of the squeeze,” a rhyme that makes friendship and hardship land on the same sound. It survives as a proverb precisely because it is a test, not a compliment.
