“Heights are earned in proportion to effort, and whoever seeks the heights stays awake through the nights.”

From the Diwan attributed to al-Shafi‘i, where the lines that follow press the point: whoever wants the heights without toil wastes his life chasing the impossible, and whoever wants pearls has to dive for them. The second half of this first line has long circulated on its own as a proverb for students.
