“Silence is the wisest answer to a fool.”

A classical Arabic maxim, and one that reappears throughout the adab literature in the form of a refusal to answer. It has a Qur’anic parallel in the description of the servants of the Most Merciful: when the ignorant address them, they say “peace,” and pass on.
