Worth knowing what this is and is not. It is not a hadith — the wording does not appear in the collections of the Sunnah, as the fatwa literature notes plainly. It is a maxim, and the closest attested form is a line of poetry in the Diwan ascribed to ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib: “Patience is the key to what is hoped for.” The meaning is soundly grounded in the Qur’an and Sunnah even where the sentence itself is not.
