No one truly understands the religion who does not count hardship a blessing and ease a trial.
Sufyan al-Thawri
“No one truly understands the religion who does not count hardship a blessing and ease a trial.”
What does Sufyan al-Thawri mean?
Sufyan al-Thawri (97–161 AH / 716–778 CE) said this in the hearing of ‘Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak, and Abu Nu‘aym records it with that chain in Hilyat al-Awliya’. The word for understanding is faqih — the same as for a jurist — which is the point: knowing the rulings is not yet understanding, if you still read hardship and ease the way everyone else does.
