“My Lord, do not leave me alone, while You are the best of inheritors.”
O Messenger! Also mention the story of Zechariah (peace be upon him), when he prayed to his Lord saying, “O my Lord! Do not leave me alone without any children. You are the best of the living, so grant me a child that lives after me.”
The plain meaning, from Al-Mukhtasar fi at-Tafsir
وَزَكَرِيَّآ إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُۥ رَبِّ لَا تَذَرْنِى فَرْدًا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلْوَٰرِثِينَ
And mention Zechariah, when he called to his Lord, "My Lord, do not leave me alone with no heir, while You are the best of inheritors."
What does Quran 21:89 mean?
This is the same request as in Surah Ali ‘Imran, said in fewer words and with the ending that gives it its balance: You are the best of inheritors. Having asked not to be left without an heir, he concedes in the same breath that the one who remains after everyone is Allah. The next verse says the call was answered and his wife was made able to bear.
