If you load your heart with the worries and burdens of this world and neglect its daily devotions — its food and life — you are like a traveller who overloads his mount and does not feed it. How quickly it will stop beneath him.
Ibn al-Qayyim (al-Fawaid)
“If you load your heart with the worries and burdens of this world and neglect its daily devotions — its food and life — you are like a traveller who overloads his mount and does not feed it. How quickly it will stop beneath him.”
What does Ibn al-Qayyim (al-Fawaid) mean?
Awrad are the regular portions of prayer, Qur’an and remembrance a person keeps each day, and Ibn al-Qayyim calls them the heart’s food and life. The image is burnout, described more than six centuries before the word existed: the load is not the whole problem — the animal is failing because it is made to carry more while being fed less.
