Hold yourselves to account before you are held to account, and weigh your deeds before they are weighed for you.
Umar ibn al-Khattab
Umar ibn al-Khattab

“Hold yourselves to account before you are held to account, and weigh your deeds before they are weighed for you.”

The explanation

What does Umar ibn al-Khattab mean?

‘Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said this as caliph, and it is transmitted in the works on asceticism and self-reckoning; al-Tirmidhi cites it in his chapter on the Day of Judgement. The full saying continues that the reckoning is lighter tomorrow for the one who took himself to account today.
