“He is not a believer who eats his fill while his neighbour beside him goes hungry.”

Narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas and recorded by al-Bukhari in al-Adab al-Mufrad, his separate collection on manners, and by al-Bayhaqi. The wording carries a condition that is easy to miss and that the scholars hold onto: “while he knows.” What is being described is not a failure to give but a decision not to look.
