“Forbearance is the master of all virtues.”

A classical Arabic maxim about hilm — the word covers forbearance, self-possession and the refusal to be provoked, and it was among the most admired traits in Arab society before Islam and after it. The Sunnah puts it the same way from the other side: the strong one is the one who controls himself when angry.
