“Contentment is wealth that never runs out.”

In this form Ibn ‘Abd Rabbih lists it among the proverbs in al-‘Iqd al-Farid, and he reports Sa‘d ibn Abi Waqqas telling his son: “if you seek wealth, seek it through contentment, for it is wealth that does not run out.” The more familiar wording, “a treasure that never perishes,” is narrated as a hadith by al-Bayhaqi, but its chain is graded weak, so it is kept here as a proverb.
