Is the month of Safar unlucky?
No. The belief that Safar brings misfortune is a pre-Islamic superstition the Prophet ﷺ named and rejected outright — “no ‘adwa, no tiyara, no hāma, and no Safar.” There is no month that is inherently unlucky, no day on which it is inadvisable to marry or travel, and nothing about the calendar that has power over what happens to you.
The four schools concur on this.
Before Islam, Safar was widely held to be a month of misfortune — people avoided marrying, travelling and beginning ventures in it. The response was direct: “There is no ‘Adwa, nor Tiyara, nor Hama, nor Safar” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5757).
Each of those four is a specific superstition being dismissed:
- ‘Adwa — that disease transmits by itself, independent of Allah's decree. Note this is not a denial of contagion as a mechanism; the same Prophet ﷺ instructed people not to enter a plague-stricken land and not to leave it, which is quarantine.
- Tiyara — drawing omens from the movement of birds, and by extension reading signs into ordinary events.
- Hāma — an old belief about an owl or a spirit emerging from the bones of the dead.
- Safar — this month specifically being ill-omened.
What this rules out more broadly:
- Lucky and unlucky days, numbers and months.
- Choosing a wedding date by astrological suitability.
- Reading horoscopes as guidance, which is treated far more seriously than the harmless entertainment it is usually taken for.
- Amulets and charms worn to avert harm.
The reasoning underneath it is not that misfortune does not happen. It is that nothing in creation has independent power to cause it, so attributing that power to a month, an object or a bird misplaces something that belongs to Allah alone.
One practical consequence. Some communities do still avoid marrying in Safar, or hold particular practices in it. These are cultural survivals rather than religious teachings, and no scholar defends them as religion — which is worth knowing if you encounter one and wonder whether you have missed something.
