Whoever recognises Allah’s blessing upon him only in his food and drink has little knowledge, and his punishment is near.
Abu al-Darda
“Whoever recognises Allah’s blessing upon him only in his food and drink has little knowledge, and his punishment is near.”
What does Abu al-Darda mean?
Abu ad-Darda’ (d. 32 AH / 652 CE), the Companion called the sage of this Ummah, meant that a person who counts only what he eats has missed most of what he has been given: guidance, safety, the very hearing and sight he counts with. Ibn Abi al-Dunya records it in his book on gratitude; Abu Nu‘aym has it with “his deeds are few” in place of “his knowledge is little.”
