When evening comes, do not wait for the morning; when morning comes, do not wait for the evening. Take from your health for your illness, and from your life for your death.
Abdullah ibn Umar
“When evening comes, do not wait for the morning; when morning comes, do not wait for the evening. Take from your health for your illness, and from your life for your death.”
What does Abdullah ibn Umar mean?
These are the words of ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (d. 73 AH / 693 CE), and al-Bukhari records them in his Sahih directly after the hadith that prompted them: the Prophet (peace be upon him) took him by the shoulder and said, “Be in this world as though you were a stranger or a traveller.” Ibn ‘Umar’s saying turns that hadith into the terms of a single day. It is his own counsel, not the Prophet’s words.
