Al-Maydani lists it in Majma‘ al-Amthal, and its early company was humble: al-Tha‘alibi files it with the sayings of wandering beggars, and al-Zamakhshari says it was written on the staff of Sasan, their legendary patron, beside “idleness is ruin.” It has long since outgrown that setting. Its religious anchor is the hadith of the birds, who are provided for after they go out hungry in the morning.
