A saying of a kind that turns up across the wisdom literature of the Near East — the closest well-known form is a line in the book of Proverbs — and it circulates in Arabic in this shape too. In Islam the concern with a good name is concrete rather than sentimental: names are chosen carefully, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) changed ones that carried a bad meaning.
