Can I keep my job if it involves alcohol or pork?
It depends on how central it is and what leaving would cost you. Serving or selling alcohol as the substance of the job is what scholars object to; working in a supermarket that happens to stock it, or an office in a company that also sells it, is treated much more leniently. What your answer turns on: how direct your involvement is, whether other work is realistically available, and who depends on your income.

This is one of the first practical crises for a convert, and the answer is neither “quit tomorrow” nor “it makes no difference”.
What is agreed: alcohol’s prohibition extends past drinking to selling, serving and profiting from it directly. A job whose actual content is pouring drinks or selling wine is the case scholars have in mind.
What is treated differently, and by most scholars far more leniently:
- A supermarket cashier who occasionally scans a bottle among a thousand other items.
- An accountant, cleaner, driver or engineer at a company with a product line that includes it.
- A restaurant role where alcohol is on the menu but your work is the kitchen or the till.
The distinction being drawn is between the prohibited thing being your work and it being incidental to your work.
What your answer actually turns on:
1. How direct it is. Pouring and selling sit at one end; incidental handling at the other. 2. What alternatives exist. A scholar advising someone in a town with one employer answers differently from one advising a person with options. 3. Who depends on you. Dependents change the calculation, and every scholar takes them into account. 4. Time. Many are advised to keep the job while actively looking rather than to resign into destitution.
Two verses that frame it rather than settle it: “Allah does not charge a soul except with that within its capacity. It will have the consequence of what good it has gained, and it will bear the consequence of what evil it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people."” (Qur’an 2:286) and “And when they have nearly fulfilled their term, either retain them according to acceptable terms or part with them according to acceptable terms. And bring to witness two just men from among you and establish the testimony for the acceptance of Allah. That is instructed to whoever should believe in Allah and the Last Day. And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out” (Qur’an 65:2)
The honest summary: if your job is selling alcohol, plan your exit and take advice on the timeline. If alcohol merely passes through a job that is about something else, most scholars would not tell you to resign — but this is worth asking specifically, with your real circumstances described, rather than deciding from a general answer.
