Be children of the Hereafter, and do not be children of this world: today there is action and no reckoning, and tomorrow there is reckoning and no action.
Ali ibn Abi Talib
“Be children of the Hereafter, and do not be children of this world: today there is action and no reckoning, and tomorrow there is reckoning and no action.”
What does Ali ibn Abi Talib mean?
Al-Bukhari quotes this at the head of a chapter on hope and long expectations, and in full it begins: “This world has set off, turning its back, and the Hereafter has set off, coming forward, and each of them has its children.” These are ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib’s own words, which al-Bukhari cites without their chain — not a hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
